The NFL Draft is in full swing, with Round Two kicking off at 6pm ET today. The Carolina Panthers kicked off the draft by selecting National Title-winning, Auburn quarterback Cam Newton. The Cleveland Browns and Atlanta Falcons put together a blockbuster trade that allowed the Falcons to move up 21 spots, in the First Round, to grab Georgia Wide Receiver Julio Jones. The Chicago Bears botched a trade with the Baltimore Ravens that still has media outlets buzzing. And finally, your Indianapolis Colts chose 6′ 7″, 311-pounder Anthony Castonzo, an Offensive Tackle from Boston College, with the 22nd overal pick in the First Round.
Castonzo will be tasked with protecting Peyton Manning’s blind side. When asked if he felt any pressure because of that, Castonzo replied, “Absolutely, but I think I’m up to the task,” said the Offensive Tackle. “I expect he’s going to demand a lot of me, and I expect I can deliver.”
The Colts’ pick makes a lot of sense, and is probably the team’s greatest current need, as the Colts are faced with an aging Ryan Diem in their Right Tackle position and free agent Charlie Johnson in their Left Tackle slot.
Word is, Castonzo posesses strong technique, a high level of maturity, and will work very well within Indianapolis’ zone blocking scheme. Experts believe he’ll be able to step in and play right away with the Colts.
Sports Illustrated’s Peter King joked, “Polian father and son take 3.2 seconds to call in the name of Anthony Castonzo at number 22. Peyton Manning takes 1.6 seconds to call Castonzo and say, ‘Be at the facility at 7 in the morning. Time to go to work.’ (Kidding. Probably.)”
The Colts have five more picks in this year’s draft. Who do you think they should choose?!
